Easter and ER

Mike started out the day with energy and was feeling a lot better. I'm not sure what it is with this treatment but Mike has really craved A&W breakfast since starting chemo. Whenever he has appetite we go for it.  The boys bopped away to the oldies as we ate eggs and toast. We had some family fun doing an Easter egg hunt and some Easter crafts (thank you Rebecca and Carrie for the Easter goodies).

Unfortunately in the afternoon, Mike and Keegan both developed fevers. Mike's cough also sounds worse. Mike's fever peaked at 38.5, so he had to head to the ER. Thankfully they got him in quickly. His blood work shows that he has virtually no neutrophils to fight off this cold (0.1). This is to be expected with chemo but it makes secondary infections a real concern. They put him on oral antibiotics and sent him home as his temperature has came back down to normal.  We will follow up with our oncologist tomorrow.

Keegan continues to be uncomfortable and is needing a lot of care tonight. We appreciate your prayers. It has been a difficult day but I am thankful that Mike is home with us tonight.

  1. Jana, I am here feeding Brooke at 2:50 AM and thought I'd check your blog to see the latest.
I must say, your title made me smile (catchy), and I had to think back to those grueling nursing papers we had to pump out--you haven"t lost those writing skills. Maybe it was worth it....
Seriously, though, I am so happy that Mike was able to come home tonight: a positive nugget in your stressful day.
(Love) "beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth... (I Corinth. 13:7-8a King James Version). God is giving you two the grace and love to conquer one moment at a tme.
Brian arrived home for a break at the tail end of our phone conversation (he was working late shipping chickens). He wanted to know what was happening when I got off the phone, and then we spent some time together, praying for you guys. We both care so much.
Off to bed again. Love you so much, my friend.

  2. Oops, sorry for the typos (after talking about your great writing skills, it looks like mine are in question. This is what happens when you try and type with one hand, while breastfeeding, at 3 AM). XOXO

  3. Jana,
Here I am at 5am ( awake since 2)....... finally decided to check your blog.
So glad Mike was able to come home for the night and that he will be checked by the oncologist tomorrow. Such a gift to have him with you tonight.Praying for God to give you the energy to tend to your boys and that Mike and Keegan will get any medical help they need to fight the germs that are attacking their bodies.
Praying for all of you to find moments to rest and that you get all the help you need step by step.
I am trying to get better quick so that if you need me I can safely come to help out.
Love you all so much .......
    Mom XOXO

  4. Mike sorry to hear you are not well. We are praying for you that all goes well with your next treatment. Stay in bed, rest, read, pray, whatever it takes to keep you resting. I heard about your trip to emerg, honestly if they do end up admitting you at some point, it really is the best place for you to be. The only bad thing is the food, get your friends to feed you. Take care lots of love and prayers.

  5. Yay for A&W breakfasts! And double yay for fun family time! Your posts have inspired me to try to slow down and focus on more of that myself. Thank you for that!

I am so glad Mike's fever has dropped and pray that it will continue to hold off. Great that he is at home, I'm sure he's much more comfortable there. I remember a couple of late night trips to the ER with my sister running a fever, it's a worrisome experience so I hope this will be the only one for you.

My troops and I continue to pray for you all.

  6. I guess I know what to do with all the A&W coupons that come in.

We are happy to hear that the fever came down. Did he get home fine? I didn't get a call in the middle of the night to come get him, so I hope he got home fine. But, if he needs a ride again, let me know! I hope that his weekly chemo appointment goes well this evening.

  7. Those darn neutrophils. As a family who totally understands lack of neutrophils, we are together praying long and hard for that amazing healing that only comes from one Person. G-CSF is awesome (if they are using it), but God can do so much more.
We're praying for health for the whole household. Lord, dry up those noses, and bring down those fevers :)

Thanks again for sharing, Jana. All our hearts grieve when you grieve, rejoice when you rejoice. Let's bring on the rejoicing!
